Global steel production reaches 1870Mt in 2019
03 February 2020Belgium: The World Steel Association (WSA) has published data that shows a 3.4% year-on-year increase in global steel production to 1870Mt in 2019 from 1810Mt in 2018. The figure belies a general decline in production in most regions: excluding China, total production fell by 1.6% year-on-year to 874Mt from 888Mt in 2018. China’s growth was 8.3%, to 996Mt from 920Mt, corresponding to an increase in its share of global production to 53% from 51%. Growth in the Middle East outstripped this at 19% year-on-year, increasing to 45.3Mt in 2019 from 38.0Mt one year previously. The Middle East now controls 2.4% of global steel production, compared to 2.1% in 2018. India and the US also experienced production growths of 1.8% and 1.5% respectively. The WSA expects the steel industry’s performance to have a staying effect on granulated blast furnace slag (GBFS) prices for cement producers in these regions.
Chettinand Cement Corp. Pvt. Ltd. orders Gebr. Pfeiffer mill
16 January 2020India: Gebr. Pfeiffer has announced that it has received an order for one MVR 6000 C-6 roller mill for Chettinand Cement Corp. Pvt. Ltd.’s upcoming 2.0Mt/yr Vishakapatnam granulated blast-furnace slag (GBFS) and slag cement
Grinding plant in Andhra Pradesh. Gebr. Pfeiffer said the mill will grind slag and cement to a fineness of between 3000 and 3800 blaine at a rate of between 235t/hr and 340t/hr. It says the mill improves plant availability by the active redundancy of the grinding rollers, enabling mill operation with reduced rollers in the event of maintenance work or a malfunction.
Kazakhstan: Technogran Aktobe plans to build a cast iron plant in Mangistau region at a cost of US$200m. The plant will produce 250,000t/yr of cast iron and 250,000t/yr of granulated slag, according to Interfax. Slag from the plant will be used for cement production and road construction. Charah opens plant at the Port of Coeymans
18 January 2019US: Charah has opened a slag grinding plant at the Port of Coeymans near Albany, New York. The unit uses the company’s proprietary process to grind granulated blast furnace slag (GBFS) to create supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs). The site is accessible by ship, truck and rail and will sell materials to concrete producers in the northeast of the country.
The new plant will also produce slag cement that is marketed under the MultiCem brand. Slag cement will be distributed throughout Charah Solutions’ MultiSource materials network, a nationwide distribution system of more than 30 sourcing locations that provide ready mix concrete (RMX) producers and other customers SCMs, including fly ash and slag cement.

India: Union officials at the Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) have asked for an investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) into an alleged fixing of the price of blast furnace granulated slag (BFGS). The RSP claims that it couldn’t sell its slag by electronic auction due to limited storage space, lack of rail transport logistics and low market price of BFGS, according to the New Indian Express newspaper. However, sources quoted by the newspaper say that the plant had sufficient storage space and that at least three times as much railway cargo capacity was available as the RSP has indicated. It is estimated that it undersold its product by at least US$15.5m. Union Tribal Affairs Minister Jual Oram has also accused the steelmaker of favouring local cement producer OCL India in the scheme.
India: Sagar Cement has ordered a vertical roller mill from Gebr. Pfeiffer for grinding granulated blast-furnace slag and granulated blast-furnace slag cements. The mill will be used at a new 160t/hr slag grinding plant at the cement producer’s Bayyavaram Village unit near Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh. Delivery is scheduled to take place before the end of 2017. No price for the order has been disclosed.
The order is for a MVR 5000 C-4 mill equipped with a 4300kW-drive and four grinding rollers with active redundancy. The plant will grind granulated blast-furnace slag with a fineness of about 4,500 cm²/g acc. Blaine and it will also be able to grind composite cements from varying portions of granulated blast-furnace slag, fly ash and gypsum.
Core components of the mills, including the roller, tension system, grinding bowl and planetary gearbox, will be supplied from Europe. The mill foundation parts, the housing and the integrated high-efficiency classifier of the type SLS 4750 BC will be provided by Gebr. Pfeiffer India. The local subsidiary will also supply most of the equipment required to complete the grinding plant, including the plant fan and hot gas generator.
