India: Finland-based Betolar introduced its AI-based service for production of reduced-CO2 concrete using its Geoprime additive at World of Concrete India 2023 on 18 October 2023. Betolar designs recipes and provides a liquid chemical dosing system and post-production services to Geoprime users. Dow Jones Institutional News reports that Betolar has concluded strategic tie-ups in South and West India, and is ‘actively planning’ further expansion.
Managing director Abhishek Bhattacharya said "Interest in our solution is growing fast in India and we have successfully demonstrated that the twin goal of sustainability and performance can be achieved remarkably faster with Betolar’s Geoprime solution.”
Indian Border Roads Organisation using steel slag to build roads near border with China
29 September 2023India: The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has been using steel slag as part of construction activity near its border with China. BRO Director General Lt General Rajeev Chaudhry made the comments as part of an inspection tour, according to the Press Trust of India. The BRO and other government agencies have increased activity near the border since 2020. Chaudhry said that around 300 BRO projects worth over US$950m had been completed in recent years. This included 295 road projects, bridges, tunnels and airfields. One notable achievement has been the construction of a vehicle-quality road at Demchok with an altitude of over 5750m, higher than the base camps for Mount Everest.
ACC and UltraTech Cement secure granulated blast furnace slag supply from Bokaro Steel Plant
25 August 2023India: Bokaro Steel Plant has won granulated blast furnace slag (GBFS) supply contracts with ACC and UltraTech Cement. Under the contracts, Bokaro Steel Plant expects to supply 1.3Mt of GBFS from its facilities in Jharkhand for use in cement production in the state. The Pioneer newspaper has reported that the contracts will run until August 2026.
Europe/India: Finland-based Betolar has secured EU-wide and Indian patents for a new waste-based alternative concrete produced without cement and capable of storing energy. Betolar said that the material, which is already patented in Finland, is especially suited for use in renewable energy infrastructure, where it can provide a storage solution for dealing with short-term peaks. Chief commercial officer Ville Voipio said that the company will now seek to establish a partnership for commercialisation of its new alternative building material.
Betolar produces and markets the Geoprime additive used to produce cement-free concrete from supplementary cementitious materials, including ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS), in regions that include India and the EU.
Construction underway on India’s first slag road
08 March 2023India: Construction is underway on a section of National Highway 66 in Maharashtra which is being built of concrete made from ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS) and slag cement. India Today News has reported that the Central Road Research Institute developed the technology, in partnership with the National Institute for Transforming India Aayog and the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research.
Border Roads Organisation uses steel slag to construct stretch of road in Arunachal Pradesh
13 January 2023India: The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has used steel slag to construct a 1km section of National Highway 713 that connects Arunachal Pradesh's Kurung Kumey district to the Chinese border. The slag material was donated by Tata Steel and transported from Jamshedpur to Arunachal Pradesh by Indian Railways free of charge, according to the Press Trust of India. The project was an initiative of BRO Director General Lt Gen Rajeev Chaudhry to introduce sustainable new technologies with the help of Central Road Research Institute-Council for Scientific & Industrial Research (CRRI-CSIR) and Tata Steel.
Betolar launches Geoprime concrete products in India
11 October 2022India: Finland-based Betolar has launched its first concrete products manufactured using Geoprime on the Indian market. Geoprime is an additive designed for use in cement-free concrete production with ash and ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS). The new concrete product range consists of precast blocks, paving slabs and tiles, and is currently on display at World of Concrete India in Mumbai, Maharashtra.
Betolar's India managing director Abhishek Bhattacharya said "We are happy to introduce our first products to our customers for the Indian markets. We have now moved from laboratory tests into the production phase, and can show concretely how well this solution works. It is great to hear the feedback from the concrete industry in the region to our sustainable solution. Decarbonisation of the concrete industry is a very current and important topic."
Road builder to pilot using steel slag in Arunachal Pradesh
08 September 2022India: The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) plans to launch a pilot scheme in Arunachal Pradesh to build roads using steel slag. It will work with the Central Road Research Institute (CRRI), according to the Press Trust of India. The intention is to explore building long-lasting roads using an alternative materials to conventional aggregates. The topography of the state - with high annual rainfall, forest vegetation and soil diversity – has also prompted the project partners to try using new materials and techniques.
India: Three new Indian concrete companies have separately secured agreements for the use of Finland-based Betolar’s Geoprime alkali-activated slag and fly ash additive. Reuters News has reported that the companies are Balaiji Cement Products, Shiv Tiles and SNEH Precast. Engineering company Godrej & Boyce has also signed a letter of intent with the supplier for pilot production of concrete blocks, paving slabs and other elements.
Betolar expects producers to achieve global concrete production volumes of 250,000t/yr of concrete containing Geoprime by 2023.
Surat becomes first city in India with a steel slag road
14 April 2022India: The first steel slag road in India has been built in Surat, Gujarat. The 1.2km road is located at Hazira Port, according to the Times of India newspaper. It was constructed by using steel slag aggregate in place of natural aggregate. The higher strength of the material has also allowed for the thickness of the road to be reduced by 30%. Around 100,000t of steel slag was used. The joint project was a collaboration between the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, the Central Road Research Institute, the Union Ministry of Steel, government think-tank NITI Ayog and ArcelorMtttal-Nippon Steel.
